This preschool is located in the village namely Akkurana to provide preschool education for the children of this village and adjoining village namely Minuminuthavely and these two villages are from 35km from Kiran Main Road and 97 km from Batticaloa town.
There are 125 families living in these 2 villages there is no easy access for the main road because the villages are full of huge trees and herbs and with narrow lane where only two wheelers could easily travel, there is no public transportation, schools, hospitals – medical units and also for drinking water.
The threats of wild elephants are often in these villages. Therefore, the movement of the people are also with much scared and less opportunity to meet their income earning activities.
Due to this, the pregnant mothers and old aged people find difficult for medical treatment. The children are much deprived with facilities for their early childhood development.
When ESCO entered these villages in year 2006, we were surprised that none of the villagers are able to put their signature, their literacy level is very poor. However the donor HDI supported ESCO and provide non formal education to youths and young adults at least to put their signatures – they were all slow learners then we set up a preschool at Akkurana village providing all necessary materials for the preschool.
Health Care centres were built in each of the villages to provide Medical clinics for the families also a brick built toilet was built for the preschool children.
Gradually a primary school start and function up to grade 5 by the department of education with the profession of learning materials by ESCO now the primary school upgraded to grade 9.
ESCO set up a water purification centre system at Minuminuthavely and Akkurana now it is maintain by Village leaders.
Well-wishers supported since 2009 for preschool development and continuing with the following to date.
There are 22 children enrolling preschool.
The children are being provided with mid-morning meals.
They all provided with 2 sets of uniforms and 2 pairs of slippers and continuing the pre education through assigned teacher who also resident of Akkurana.
The group of mothers organized to support the preschool in preparing mid-morning meals, cleaning of the compounds in roaster.
During the closure of schools due to Covid 19 the children were provided with food items to their families to prepare the mid-morning meals and learning materials also provided to them at home level.
One Toilet constructed during October this year for the preschool.
7 children from the preschool entered the primary school this year.
